![]() ![]() Nguyen's decision not to put diacritical marks on his Vietnamese characters' names enhances the novel's paradoxes and allows it to gain multivalent, poetic meanings across languages. As in The Sympathizer, Vo Danh - being "a man of two minds" - refuses to tell a cohesive narrative. After a harrowing reckoning, he is committed to a psychiatric ward, where he must write his confession as a form of recovery and self-defense. This fluidity can be seen in Vo Danh's meandering approach to self-knowledge. The Committed's revolutionary core is its plasticity - a novel of ideas that continuously shapeshifts to question its raison d'être. 'The Committed's revolutionary core is its plasticity - a novel of ideas that continuously shapeshifts to question its raison d'être. His capitalist venture also triggers violent confrontations with Algerian gangsters whose history reflects the insidious legacy of French colonialism. He peddles hashish to complacent French Communist intellectuals and Vietnamese immigrants with friendly ties to Vietnam's Communist government. Although no longer a spy, to maintain a semblance of ideological solidarity with his friend Bon - a rabid anticommunist - Vo Danh becomes a drug dealer. At the same time, he is aware that unruly forces often conspire to undermine his resistance. In two instances in The Committed, when he resists being coerced to act at gunpoint, he gains moral strength from doing nothing. ![]() While disillusioned with communism, Vo Danh is not ready to embrace capitalism or disavow Marxism. The Committed explores both of these scenarios. "To be committed to _" means to embrace a cause or a state of mind, either by action or inaction, but in another context it means to be stripped of agency if one is deemed unsound or at risk, thus must be admitted for psychological evaluation. While in French "committed" is compartmentalized into distinct situations - engagé is committed to an ideal, while interné means being admitted to a mental institution - its English etymology captures holistically the tension between fate and free will, power and powerlessness. Even if Vo Danh cannot commit to one ideological framework, his desire to undergo an intensive self-examination - akin to psychological torture - makes him a committed person. While his two novels have not provided clear answers, they can be visualized as one intersecting loop - an infinity model to approach the inquiry. Should our political sympathies align with our parents - refugees from the former Republic of South Vietnam who rejected Communism and left Vietnam for the U.S., or with those who chose to follow Ho Chi Minh's vision of freedom and independence? And can we have a balanced perspective if we did not directly suffer war or its consequences, but learned about war's impacts from family members toward whom we owe both blood and emotional allegiance?Īuthor Interviews 'The Refugees' Author Says We Should All Know What It Is To Be An Outsiderįour years old when the Vietnam War ended in April 1975, Nguyen has chosen the novel form as a safe aesthetic space to grapple with these concerns. And while it's a universal question, its ideological implications prove especially challenging for Vietnamese Americans who came of age after the end of the Vietnam War. "What is to be done?" - the question that Nguyen poses in both novels - is a timeless inquiry into the forces that shape our moral worldview. The Committed also reiterates the ideas first articulated in The Sympathizer. From a satirical James Bond-esque spy story in The Sympathizer, the author shifts to James Baldwin's intersectional politics in The Committed to address greed, prejudice, and violence. More intimate in setting than The Sympathizer's transcontinental scope, The Committed employs the motif of organized crime as linkage between the various demimondes populated by disaffected Algerian immigrants, maternal Cambodian prostitutes, and nostalgic Vietnamese thugs all living in France. That our hero arrives four days after Bastille Day is significant, for the ideals of liberté, egalité, and fraternité have proven elusive in France's former colonies, and it would take a visionary of Mandela's stature to give them new life. Having survived a communist reeducation camp, a perilous sea crossing, and a long sojourn in an Indonesian refugee center, he arrives in Paris on Jthe birthday of Nelson Mandela - to become, once again, a refugee. With smoke-and-mirrors panache, The Committed - Viet Thanh Nguyen's sequel to The Sympathizer - continues the travails of our Eurasian Ulysses, now relocated to France and self-identified as Vo Danh (which literally means "Nameless"). ![]()

The space between the mid-level saves in Tropical Freeze is too great though, and there’s no consistent feeling of balance as a result. In January 1979, production was delayed by protracted union negotiations, specifically over Fiat's plans to move production from plants in Cassino, Sulmona and Termini Imerese to Turin and Desio. On response cards distributed by FIAT's sales department, participants gauged the design's exterior and interior appearance and finish, spaciousness, instruments and controls, engine size, price, and its provisional name: Rustica. In February 1978, Fiat test-marketed prototypes to potential customers and dealers - at an unpublicized event in Milan's Novegro Park. Within a year, Italdesign had made 20 rolling chassis. Under the prototyping designation Progetto 141, Fiat subsequently commissioned Italdesign to create production studies, a master model, provisional tooling and pre-production prototypes. ĭespite Benedetti's departure, Italdesign presented Fiat with two full-scale models, four alternative side designs, an interior buck or mockup and a comprehensive study of the Panda's competition - as well as a series of tempera renderings by Giugiaro. Giugiaro and Mantovani completed the design for its 7 August deadline, discovering only then that Benedetti had left Fiat. From its inception, the project would use monocoque construction with a nearly flat floor and a sufficiently high roof to accommodate upright seating. To ensure its practicality, he conceived that the Panda's cargo area should accommodate no less than two 50-liter wine demijohns, along with a full complement of passengers. Notably, in the late 1950s, the head of Renault, Pierre Dreyfus, had called for the Renault R4 to have an egalitarian approach, like blue jeans, "which people can wear in any situation if you do away with the pretension of snobbism and social conformity." ĭuring the design gestation, Giugiaro took particular inspiration from a folding lounge chair in conceiving the seats of the Zero simple, easy to maintain, modular, inexpensive to manufacture. ![]() Giugiaro developed the packaging and styling Mantovani conceived the car's technical approach.įiat CEO Carlo De Benedetti's design brief specified a straightforward 'container' with a spacious and spartan interior, weighing and costing no more than the Fiat 126 it was replacing - and having a similar design approach as the Citroen 2CV or Renault 4. However, it does not explain the stabilization of the transition state that the enzymes achieve. A lock and key refers to the combination that enables a door to be securely closed. The lock and key model theory first postulated by Emil Fischer in 1894 shows the high specificity of enzymes. Unlike the lock-and-key model, the induced fit model shows that enzymes are rather flexible structures. As for the induced fit model suggested by Daniel Koshland in 1958, it suggests that the active site continues to change until the substrate is completely bound to the active site of the enzyme, at which point the final shape and charge are determined. Like a key into a lock, only the correct size and shape of the substrate ( the key) would fit into the active site ( the key hole) of the enzyme ( the lock). In the lock-and-key model, the enzyme-substrate interaction suggests that the enzyme and the substrate possess specific complementary geometric shapes that fit exactly into one another. At present, there are two models, which attempt to explain enzyme specificity: By using a combination of readily accessible experimental and computational experiments in water, we explored the factors governing the association between polyanionic dyn4arene and a series of ,-alkyldiammonium ions of increasing chain length. ![]() ![]() ![]() Here is my literary analysis for the book! *Warning: spoilers ahead!* I admit to being the latter, but still acknowledge that the play is extremely well-written and has a lot to offer with a fresh perspective. Both of these solutions offer excellent performance, scalability, and data integrity among many other features. MySQL and MongoDB are both popular open-source databases with a large user base and strong communities. What to Consider When Choosing a Database For this reason, it is best to avoid them entirely. Transactions are supported by groups of operations as described above, but this has caused some users to look for other alternatives due to performance issues and bottlenecks.Īnother thing to consider is that, as a document-oriented database, MongoDB does not support foreign keys.įoreign key constraints are currently not working in MongoDB, and can cause serious data integrity issues in an application. Joins introduce ambiguity about what the unique identifier is supposed to be, which can cause problems with data integrity. The reason joins are not supported is that MongoDB expects there to be a primary key on every inserted record, which is used to identify unique records. There is no document-level join in MongoDB, however, it is possible to store related documents in sub-collections, but this adds overhead and you might see some performance issues as a result. The process of undoing any changes made is called a “rollback” operation, and also uses this identifier to determine what needs to be undone (rolled back). It then returns a unique identifier for this transaction. Instead, it groups multiple operations by utilizing the begin command, which can run in isolation on the same document or collection of data. ![]() MongoDB does not offer transaction support at the document level. In addition to this, each database has different syntax and capabilities so they won’t work in the same way. MongoDB uses a custom-built storage engine, whereas MySQL comes with InnoDB as its default. ![]() MongoDB was designed to handle unstructured data while MySQL is a well-established traditional relational database management system (RDBMS). The next major shift in the data storage industry is SQL-on-Hadoop, but it takes time for this to reach its potential. ![]() The concept of NoSQL databases was introduced because developers were tired of dealing with relational databases that failed to meet their needs as data volumes began to grow exponentially. MongoDB is a modern, high-performance, open-source NoSQL database available for free under the AGPL license. At the row level, however, a two-phase commit is used which can rollback changes made if any of the rows in your query fail to update successfully. If a statement fails, all changes will be rolled back. When transactions are used at the statement level, only data committed to one statement is tracked. MySQL supports transactions that can be used at the statement or row-level, beneath the document level. The process of updating an index is called “rebuilding” and can have a large negative impact on system performance if a rebuild needs to happen during peak load. Indexing has a cost, however, as each index must be updated every time a row of data is changed or added to the table. These indexes allow MySQL to narrow down results faster as the data is read from the disk. MySQL provides indexes that help speed up queries based on different types of criteria, which is good if you are looking for better performance in your data operations. MySQL uses tables and rows to store data, has reference based integrity policies, and accesses data with structured query language (SQL). The MySQL relational database management system is a widely used, free, and open-source database system. This post will explore some of those differences to help you determine which database is right for your operational needs, your next project, or just as a general guide if you are interested in either of these database types.
